Nigel grew up in black and white in Lincolnshire. He got repeatedly told off for scribbling in school books but never did an art exam, choosing woodwork instead. He scrambled into Art College and trained as a designer and illustrator. He worked as a senior designer in publishing for a long time until he eventually jumped ship and ran away to concentrate on illustration.
He’s illustrated around a hundred titles and completed a wonderful Masters in Authorial Illustration from Falmouth in 2019. He is interested in all kinds of everything and can’t keep his nose out of books. He has performed stand up comedy, been abducted in Bolivia and still has the table he made in woodwork.
Books were absent growing up, but he did spend a lot of time staring at the pictures in his sister’s illustrated Robinson Crusoe book. He finds it weird talking about himself in the third person.
